For the record. I gave a copy of this article to the Managers of the Santa Clara store when I went for my interview to work there as a part time sales person. They weren't too happy to see it. I didn't get the job.
Virtual Postscript was covered by the SteveNote 6.23.03. it is among the most valuable new features of Panther since it turns all non-Postscript printers into Postscript printers instantly. This is huge. Previously hundreds of dollars now in the OS. Amazing. The Seybold crowd will love this one.
Premiere for FCE or $500 off FCP is an excellent move. Very helpful and valuable offer. I wonder how that will work for the Academic FCP since it is only $499.
I visited the Santa Clara store with a friend a few weeks ago. She wanted to by headphones for her iPod. They had a pair of $250 Bose headphones on display. But the AA batteries were dead. When I asked for new batteries, they said they had none because their requests to corporate for more hadn't been delivered yet. When I asked why they couldn't use petty cash to go buy more at the Radio Shack down the Mall alley, they said that they had no petty cash with which to do so. When I volunteered to go buy some, they said they wouldn't be able to reimburse me for that.
One of the sales persons told us to go look at that model at the Bose store nearby. We did and she bought an unpowered model for $150 that wasn't offered at the Apple Store.
When I went back to the Apple Store and told them, no one seemed upset that they had lost a $250 sale over a pair of 39 AA batteries. There seems to be no sense of DUTY among employees there. No sense of customer comes first. Who ever heard of a business without petty cash for emergency expenses? I think this is an outrage.
I couldn't agree more. It's nice to know I am not the only electronica person who is pissed at how many years we have had to put up with the dreaded pause between tracks in portable playback.
I have more like 1,500 electronica albums without gaps between tracks.
But who listens to us?
Mikem,
When you "Join CD Tracks" do all those tracks become ONE track? Is there no longer a way to listen to a particular song from that CD without scanning through a single "track" to find the place where it begins? Or do the tracks still have individual start and stop points within the joined set?
Thanks for the clarification.
Regarding Suggestion #2 Encoding Double Albums
Since iTunes 3, when encoding double albums there is a new option to identify multiple disc albums and the encoding goes 1-01, 1-02, 1-03, etc. then 2-01, 2-02, 2-03 etc. so that songs will appear in the album list in the proper order unlike what Hadley has suggested. It is no longer a problem. Aparently Hadley didn't notice this change in the program.
I think the Dock sucks! I have recent items set to maximum 50 applications and 50 documents and only use the Dock to launch something not listed in Recent Items (under the blue apple in the upper left corner). I use Minimize In Place (http://www.macoshacks.com) to shrink stuff, hide to reduce clutter and LiteSwitch X (http://www.proteron.com) for switching. I find the Dock absolutely useless. I leave it hidden on the right side for seldom use.
You've had better luck than I. I experience an OS X "crash" every few months. & ; ^ )
Let me see if I can guess the next 10 reasons why OS X is better to complete the Top 10.
3. Column View. This superior way of looking at, organizing and managing drives, folders and files is the NeXt best thing to sliced bread.
4. Multitasking. Whatever you're doing in one application can be left to itself while you do something else in others and so on without interfering nor slowing down any of them.
5. Classic Mode. Most OS 9 programs run faster in Classic than natively. When a 9 applicaction crashes, it doesn't take down the entire system with it.
6. The Digital Hub. OS X comes with a suite of applications that are way better than their OS 9 counterparts and some that don't exist in the OS 9 world at all.
7. Multiprocessor aware. OS X takes advantage of an many processors as you have to run it in.
8. OS X auto-configures your network and internet connection.
9. OS X audio and music standards are far superior to the previous audio and music scheme.
10. OS X looks great! Aqua is very cool for the eyes to live with.
11. OS X is Fun to be in!
12. OS X feels fast enough, even on so called "slow" and "unsupported" Macs.
