by Hadley Stern Jul 14, 2003

Check back for live coverage of Macworld New York 2003. AppleMatters will be reporting live from the keynote address by Greg Joswiak, Vice President of Hardware Product Marketing starting at 9:30 am. Bookmark this page and see you then!

7:49 am
What a difference a lack of Steve makes…I was last at Macworld NY when Steve Jobs announced the cube in 2000. Then the line was literally out the door at 7am. This morning, at almost eight o’clock there are only 20 odd people here. It just goes to show the power that Apple (and Steve Jobs) has over the success—or failure of Macworld.

9:20 am
The good news? We are in the hall…the bad news? Its empty and the airport signal is horrible. So we may or may not be able to update. We’ll see. Thanks for tuning in, and hopefully we’ll have something for you!

  • Premiere for FCE or $500 off FCP is an excellent move. Very helpful and valuable offer. I wonder how that will work for the Academic FCP since it is only $499.

  • MWCP was never meant to be a big deal for Apple.  They originally weren’t even going to come when it was still called MWNY.  Remember WWDC?  That’s where they showed the “good” stuff.  When new PBs are ready, Apple will send out a press release.  If there’s a completely new product, Apple will announce a Special Event.  They’ve done it in the past you know.  Anything other then a recap of software and hardware just introudced was just wishful thinking.

  • Nice to see Soundtrack go Solo.

What’s with the Virtual Postscript. That might not be too bad.

Panther Server info is welcome. If Apple is to make inroads into IT a stable Server Platform is a must.

  • Virtual Postscript was covered by the SteveNote 6.23.03. it is among the most valuable new features of Panther since it turns all non-Postscript printers into Postscript printers instantly. This is huge. Previously hundreds of dollars now in the OS. Amazing. The Seybold crowd will love this one.

  • Virtual Postscript as an invaluable tool especially for small business owners who have multiple machines and old inkjet color printers that are 0S9 compatible. With Virtual Postscript, you can now see all of those printers through your network. Hang onto your old Epsons, and HP inkjets!

  • In my opinion the best new feature of Panther for professional Mac users is Expos. This will allow users who have multiple documents in multiple programs to quickly and efficiently navigate through the sea of windows on their desktop. Ken Bereskin demoed how this could be used and my jaw almost hit the floor. Now I can see all my documents or just one of them. I can view all my photoshop documents at once, or one at a time. I can put all my windows away at once or bring them all back. And Expos remembers all the original window sizes too. No resizing or moving around. This makes WindowShade look like child’s play. More to come on this great feature!

  • Another major announcement this morning will be the arrival of OSX native applications by PTC. As I have said before, Apple dominates the graphic design, and movie and sound industries but is often left out in engineering and industrial design industries. This could be a huge move in increasing market share within the ID world especially when coupled with the new G5s!
